Love is in the Bangkok air!
One shouldn’t be sad that New Year’s is over with many more festive occasions coming up such as Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day in February. Valentine’s Day – commonly known as the day where sweethearts spend time with each other and exchange cutesy gifts or where a secret admirer sends chocolates and flowers. It is also a good excuse to get dolled up and go out for dinner!
Although Valentine’s Day is commonly seen as a day reserved for happy couples in a relationship while being the one day single people would like to avoid, don’t forget that everyone – including singles – can take full advantage of the chocolates on sale and the scrumptious dining promotions catered to this occasion.
While many restaurants throughout Bangkok offer great food for such an occasion, we are focusing on the Sukhumvit Area as usual where we have several recommendations of places we have personally tried.
An Italian restaurant located on the 35th floor of The Continent Hotel Bangkok, the Medinii offers a luxurious atmosphere with the option of both window-side tables as well as cushy private sofas. Alongside being conveniently near the Asok BTS station, dining at the Medinii gives you the lavish high dining experience with the backdrop of the Sukhumvit city skyline.
The restaurant usually serves an international buffet breakfast in the morning for hotel guests, an Italian lunch or Sunday brunch in the afternoons, and an option of a la carte dining or a free flow package in the evenings. However, on special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, the Medinii restaurant has prepared a 5-course set dinner at THB 3,999++ per couple with a glass of bubbles each.
If you wish to enjoy a romantic dinner outdoors, the restaurant also provides a poolside dining option at the H2O Bar on the 37th floor of the hotel where you can also enjoy the city view with the accompaniment of the evening breeze. The H2O Bar will provide a slightly more cosy and casual atmosphere than Medinii but serves the same menu that is of course, equally as delicious, on this special occasion.
Leapfrog Bar & Grill
An alternative choice in Sukhumvit would be the Leapfrog Bar & Grill located on the rooftop of the Galleria Ten Hotel Bangkok. Rather than being near Asok, the Leapfrog is not far from the Nana BTS station and is nestled within the tranquil Sukhumvit Soi 10 which is only a short walk away from the skytrain station. The hotel is on the left hand side after walking into the soi but you can always call 02 615 0999 to ask for a shuttle bus to pick you up.
The Leapfrog is usually only opened in the evenings while the hotel’s buffet breakfast is served at the @g Restaurant in the lobby. However, they do have an interesting new feature called the gSanook breakfast where they provide an exclusive set breakfast for those staying on their brand new gSanook floor under a unique retro music theme. Other than that, Leapfrog offers a la carte dining that can be enjoyed both indoors and outdoors and of course, set dinners on special occasions such as Valentine’s Day.
Here, they have prepared a 4-course set dinner at THB 2,999 net per couple with a bottle of sparkling wine. The menu they are going to offer is very much in the romantic Valentine’s theme with a pink colour scheme and cute decorations. For hors d’oeuvres they have Grilled Scallop & Prawn with Strawberry, Mango and Avocado Salad and Cold Strawberry Soup, a choice between Salmon or Venison Steak with Strawberry Sauce for the main course, and Strawberries in a Cheesecake for dessert.
The Bodega Restaurant might be a little off Sukhumvit but still very close and pretty much within the same zone. Located on the 2nd floor of the Arcadia Suites, you can easily travel to the hotel by getting off at the Ploenchit BTS station at exit 3 and call for a shuttle bus at 02 305 6565 to pick you up in front of Soi Nai Lert. Although the hotel is quite deep into the soi, it’s still very easy to get it and also gives you the benefit of a private dining experience as you don’t get any disturbance from the roadside.
A unique feature of the Bodega Restaurant would be the poolside dining they offer. There is the option of dining indoors but if you want to enjoy the outdoor breeze, the Bodega has a beautiful poolside area where the swimming pool is illuminated by lights and the water gives off a unique green hue from the evening lighting while being a clear crystal blue in the daytime.
Akin to the Medinii Restaurant, the Bodega usually provides an international buffet breakfast for Arcadia Suites hotel guests in the mornings but switch to a la carte dining with a menu featuring western, Thai, and fusion dishes. And of course, catering to the lovebirds’ needs on Valentine’s Day with a 5-course set dinner with different options for each course at THB 1,099 net per couple this year with a choice of either a glass of red or white wine per person.
A brand new venue that just recently opened near the middle of last year is the 180° Lounge on the top floor of the Grand Swiss Hotel Bangkok in Sukhumvit Soi 11 near the Nana BTS station at exit 3. Unlike the other restaurants we have mentioned, the 180° Lounge is more of a sky bar where you can enjoy drinks and tapas, which is exactly what the 180° Lounge has prepared for Valentine’s Day!
This is more suitable for those who like to drink and are looking for a late night party rather than a quiet dinner. Although the setting of the 180° Lounge is quiet and serene, it is within a matter of steps from the bustling nightlife of Sukhumvit Soi 11 and with their Unlimited Beers & Wines with Tapas with a special welcome champagne on Valentine’s Day for THB 1,599++ per couple, the 180° Lounge functions as a great place to spend some quality time and warm up before hitting one of Bangkok’s hottest party scenes.
Citrus Café at Citrus Sukhumvit 13 Hotel
Also located near the Sukhumvit 11 nightlife, the Citrus Café of the Citrus Sukhumvit 13 Bangkok is nestled within Soi 13, a walking distance away from the neighbouring soi 11. The Citrus Café is on the B1 floor of the hotel and also usually provides a buffet breakfast in the mornings and a la carte choices in the afternoon onwards.
However, they do happen to have a Valentine’s Day set menu that is very well priced for those who are looking for a romantic dining experience on a budget. At THB 799 net per couple, the Citrus Café has prepared a 4-course set dinner with 2 glasses of wine where you have two choices to choose from for each course.
As you can see from our recommendations, there is something out there for everyone on Valentine’s Day – for the luxurious crowd, the hip and trendy, the quiet and peaceful, the lounging party-goers, and for those looking for a good fulfilling meal without breaking the budget.
